PSL's Daily Standup with Gustavo Arroyave

I've come to realize that the challenges are here at PSL. Most importantly, I identify myself with the company culture - we are aligned.

— Gustavo Arroyave, Scrum Master at PSL

PSL values its employees and their personal and professional goals. Part of our ethos dictates we help our workers grow and advance in their careers, which is why we encourage them to follow their interests and passions in order to find or create a role that's fulfilling.

In today's Daily Standup, we interview Gustavo Arroyave, a scrum master for over ten years at PSL.

Gustavo Arroyave, Scrum Master at PSL

How long have you been at PSL?

15 years. Why have I stayed for 15 years? Why would I leave when I have the opportunity to work with new customers, and to learn about new products and new businesses? I've come to realize that the challenges are here at PSL. Most importantly, I identify myself with the company culture - we are aligned. The work environment is great, I like the flat hierarchy we have here. There are just a few bosses, and I have a lot of freedom to do my work.

Trajectory at PSL

  • Started as software engineer / started to make design decisions about the product
  • Technical lead / architect
  • Project Manager / Scrum master

What are your biggest professional challenges?

The biggest challenge is not the technical part or the customer, but working with people. People are motivated in different ways. The real challenge is to understand how to motivate people to get them to do their best work.

What are some of the best things about PSL?

End of the year party is super fun. Also, it's great when we have the opportunity to go out as a team and spend time together outside of the office, sharing as friends, like when we go go-karting. The people in the company are the most exciting thing about PSL.

I believe in our values, this isn't just a speech. I want all of our new employees to know, "We can help you if you are open to feedback."

What advice would you give to new PSL employees?

Don't resist adapting to PSL's ways of working, which is to be transparent, honest, and committed to exceeding customer expectations. So, in this way you need to be open to feedback. I believe in our values, this isn't just a speech. I want all of our new employees to know, "We can help you if you are open to feedback."

What is your motto or personal mantra?

Be transparent. It is okay to fail. The only way to succeed is learning from your failures or mistakes.

What's your favorite game?

Soccer. Recently, I've also gotten into mountain biking. But, I don't have a favorite game. I'm so bad at video games, so I don't like to play them.

If someone, who is not yet working at PSL, asked me why should I start working at PSL? I would tell them:

PSL is a place where you can grow as a professional and you have the freedom to challenge yourself and explore different areas as a software engineer or in any other role. You can take the opportunity to try different roles at PSL in order to discover where you are the most talented. PSL provides the support to make that happen.
